|Hi, I just picked up a Gold Top USA Wolfgang Special (serial number starts 91xxx, signature branded in headstock, etc.) and it has Pat Pending branded on the back of the headstock.
What I am curious about is the neck has what feels like a very light coat of matte clearcoat on it (not on the fingerboard), yet the profile is the same as my friend's USA arch tops, so it's not a Korean EXP model.
Any ideas on what the deal is with the neck finish? Could it just be an accumulation of wax/oil, as I read that some gun oils can build up an almost varnish-like finish?
Am I ok to take it off with fine abrasive paper/wire wool and oil it?
If it helps, I can post up the full serial number, but it just seems weird.
The thing sounds amazing and plays well, but I would prefer a natural oiled neck (I spent 20 years playing an RG/Jem hybrid with natural neck finish and lacquer always feels "sticky" to me).
Why can't my fingers do what they did when I used to have time to practice, dammit?!
